Led by a group of intensely secretive elders, the civilization begins to raise more questions than answers. Rules are strict, punishments severe, and young men are nowhere to be found. The more he learns about his new, seemingly happy home, the more Gene begins to wonder if the world they've entered is just as evil as the one they left behind. But as life at the refuge grows more perilous, he and Sissy only grow closer. In an increasingly violent world, all they have is each other . . . if they can stay alive.

Gene est l’un des derniers humains sur Terre. Le seul moyen de survie pour cet adolescent : se faire passer pour l’un de ses prédateurs. Ne pas rire, ne pas transpirer, ne pas montrer qu’il est un humain, un « homiféré ».

Cela fait dix-sept ans qu’il vit secrètement parmi ceux qui n’hésiteraient pas à le tuer s’ils découvraient sa véritable identité. Malgré tout, Gene est parvenu à se fondre parmi ces « autres » et à créer un semblant de vie normale. Mais sa routine est bouleversée, et sa sécurité, menacée, le jour où il est sélectionné pour participer au grand jeu : la Traque. Toutes les décennies, le gouvernement organise une immense chasse où seule une poignée de privilégiés peuvent pister, abattre et dévorer les rares humains survivants gardés en captivité pour l’événement. Formé à l’Institut pour traquer ses semblables, Gene est sur le qui-vive. Car désormais, sa vie s’organise en meute avec les chasseurs, et le moindre faux pas pourrait trahir sa condition et lui être fatal. Parviendra-t-il à maintenir l’illusion, alors que les soupçons sur sa vraie nature s’alourdissent ?
