After escaping the alternate Topeka and the evil wizard Randall Flagg, Roland's ka-tet travel to the farming village of Calla Bryn Sturgis where they meet the townsfolk, as well as Father Callahan, who was originally introduced in 'Salem's Lot. He and the townsfolk request the ka-tet's assistance in battling against the Wolves of Thunderclap, who come once a generation to take one child from each pair of the town's twins. After a few months of being away, the children are then returned "roont" (ruined) - mentally handicapped and destined to grow to enormous size and die young. The Wolves are due to come in about a month's time.
Father Callahan also tells the gunslingers his remarkable story of how he left Maine following his battle with the vampire Kurt Barlow in the novel 'Salem's Lot. Since that encounter he has gained the ability to identify Type-3 vampires with a blue aura. After some time he begins killing these minor vampires as he finds them; however, this makes him a wanted man amongst the "low men" and so Callahan must go into exile. Eventually he is lured into a trap and dies, allowing him to enter Mid-World in 1983, much as Jake did when killed in The Gunslinger. He appears near the Calla with an evil magic ball called Black Thirteen, and is found by the Manni people in a place called The Doorway Cave.
Not only do Roland of Gilead and his ka-tet have to protect the Calla-folken from the Wolves, they must also protect a single red rose that grows in a vacant lot on Second Avenue and Forty-Sixth Street in mid-town Manhattan of 1977. If it is destroyed, then the Tower (which is the rose in another form) will fall. In order to get back to New York to prevent this they must use the sinister Black Thirteen. To add to that, Roland and Jake have noticed bizarre changes in Susannah's behavior, which are linked to the event recounted in The Waste Lands when Susannah couples with the demon in the stone circle. Roland informs Eddie that Susannah has been impregnated by the demon, and though he fears for her safety he remains surprisingly calm. They promise to keep the fact that they know a secret from Susannah, but later Susannah reveals to the ka-tet that she herself has come to grips with it, and knowledge of a second personality living in Susannah named Mia "daughter of none" is shared.
Jake finds out that his new friend Benny Slightman's father is a traitor by following him to a military outpost between the Calla and Thunderclap known as "The Dogan" (which is also featured in The Dark Tower: The Long Road Home). Jake tells Roland, who shows mercy by not killing Slightman, instead leaving him alive for his son and Jake's sake. The wolves attack, using weapons resembling the snitches found in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series (which are actually stamped 'Harry Potter Model') and lightsabers found in George Lucas' Star Wars, and are revealed to be robots and to have Doctor Doom-like visages. The gunslingers, along with some help from a few plate-throwing women in the Calla, defeat the wolves, all the while with the children safely hidden in a rice patch nearby. Mia takes over the body of Susannah and flees to the doorway cave, where she uses Black Thirteen to transport herself to New York.

La gente della cittadina chiede aiuto al Ka-tet contro i Lupi di Rombo di Tuono, che si presentano a ogni generazione per prendere un bambino da ogni coppia di gemelli. Non solo Roland ed il Ka-tet devono difendere il Calla dai Lupi, devono anche proteggere una rosa rossa che cresce in un lotto vacante tra la 2^ Avenue e la 46^ Strada a mid-town Manhattan nel 1977. Se la rosa venisse distrutta, la Torre cadrebbe con lei. Per poter tornare a New York ed evitarlo devono usare la sinistra Tredici Nera.
Come se non bastasse, Roland e Jake hanno notato cambiamenti bizzarri nel comportamento di Susannah, riconducibili agli avvenimenti raccontati in Terre desolate quando Susannah si occupò del demone nel cerchio di pietra.

Callahan queda anonadado por el descubrimiento de que su naturaleza es ficción. El ka-tet deciden cruzar una vez más a través de la puerta Ignota para salvar a Susannah, salvar la Rosa y encontrar al escritor Stephen King.

Roland et ses amis pistoleros, désormais indéfectiblement liés, continuent de cheminer le long du Sentier du Rayon. C'est là que des émissaires de la vallée de La Calla – le Père Callahan, prêtre défroqué au passé mouvementé déjà apparu dans Salem, un des premiers romans de Stephen King, trois fermiers et un robot géant – viennent les trouver et leur demandent assistance : les loups de Tonnefoudre, des créatures monstrueuses qui, une fois par génération, arrachent la moitié des enfants à leurs familles pour les renvoyer décérébrés, déciment la communauté. Or, les Loups doivent venir dans un mois.
Roland accepte d'aider la communauté de la Calla car cela fait partie
des devoirs des pistoleros mais aussi car le Père Callahan détient un
objet maléfique, la Treizième Noire, qui pourrait être fort utile au
ka-tet. Le groupe commence par collecter toutes les histoires qu'il peut
trouver, à commencer par celle de Callahan. Mais Roland a d'autres
sujets de préoccupation : il a remarqué l'étrange comportement de
Susannah et informe Eddie qu'elle pourrait être enceinte du démon
l'ayant violée (voir Terres perdues).
Susannah elle-même est consciente qu'une nouvelle personnalité, Mia, a
émergé chez elle. D'autre part, le groupe doit aussi se préoccuper de la
rose qui est la représentation de la Tour sombre dans notre monde,
aussi Eddie, à l'aide de la Treizième Noire, emprunte-t-il une porte
entre les mondes pour se rendre à New York et persuader Calvin Tower, le
propriétaire du terrain où se trouve la rose, de ne pas céder à la
pression de personnes qui voudraient le voir vendre et d'aller se cacher
en attendant que les pistoleros puissent l'aider.Jake découvre que le père de son nouvel ami, Benny Slightman, est un traître chargé d'informer les Loups sur le lieu où seront cachés les enfants. Il en informe Roland qui décide de laisser le traître en vie par égard pour son fils et parce qu'il ne présente plus de danger pour le plan que les pistoleros ont mis en place. Quand les Loups arrivent, le plan se déroule plus ou moins comme prévu et tous les Loups sont anéantis au prix de pertes légères. Mais, à l'issue du combat, les pistoleros s'aperçoivent que Susannah a disparu, emportant avec elle la Treizième Noire.

Дети вскоре возвращаются, но превращенные в безмозглых уродов — рунтов. Приходит время новой жатвы, но многие жители Кальи Брин Стерджис недовольны сложившимся порядком вещей. И как нельзя вовремя пожаловали стрелки.
Сюзанна беременна, но совсем не обычным ребенком, и вновь в её разуме ведется ожесточенная борьба за тело. Не все в порядке и у Роланда: безжалостный сухой скрут начинает пожирать суставы стрелка. Тем временем на Нью-Йоркском уровне Башни ведется охота за пустырем с розой, утраты которой допустить нельзя, иначе целостность мира будет безвозвратно нарушена.
Значимое место в романе занимает история отца Каллагэна, главного героя романа «Жребий», оказавшийся в Калье после долгих странствий по мирам.
